How to get to St. Méard de Gurçon!

About motorway tolls: If you're driving long distances in France the Autoroute system is excellent - far faster and less clogged than its UK equivalent. However, the majority of autoroutes do incur tolls - for example the section from Bordeaux to St. Méard currently costs €3.80 for cars. The Michelin website can calculate these automatically for you.

Paying motorway tolls: The simplest method, especially if you've yet to obtain cash, is to use your credit card in the CB (carte bleu) lanes. The ticket machines accept UK Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards, but NOT Electron or Maestro. The card simply slides in and out in a second or two and you're done...

By car from the UK and Ireland by ferry or tunnel...

These are the driving distances and times given by taking the Michelin recommended route from the main ports:

Port Distance Journey Time
Roscoff
695 km / 432 miles
7hr 07
St. Malo
558 km / 347 miles
5hr 44
Cherbourg
704 km / 437 miles
7hr 20
Caen
569 km / 353 miles
6hr 22
Le Havre
622 km / 386 miles
6hr 43
Dieppe
677 km / 420 miles
7hr 07
Boulogne
797 km / 495 miles
8hr 10
Calais
829 km / 514 miles
8hr 27

These figures are based on Michelin's 2007 recommended routes and estimated times. If you've driven this way before you may not be aware yet of a new stretch of autoroute, the A28, which changes the recommended route from the northern-eastern ports away from Paris to go via Rouen and Le Mans. Not only is this quicker and shorter, it's probably a whole lot less stressful than the Peripherique around the capital! (Ultimately this road is planned to run non-stop from Calais to Bayonne and the Spanish border)

Note that while it is possible to do the entire journey in one day from southern England via the short crossings, it is a very long journey, and we'd recommend a stop-over en route. Don't forget these journey times don't include stops and assume normal traffic conditions - but as such they do tend to be pretty reliable.

By air from the UK and Ireland into Toulouse...

St. Méard is a little over two and a half hours from Toulouse airport by car and for certain journeys at certain times of year this may be an option worth investigating. Toulouse is a major hub airport and serves a wide range of destinations through many airlines. A number of companies provide car rental at the airport, and as we have no public transport a car is highly recommended!

Recommended driving route: From the airport head for the the A62 follow signs to Bordeaux. Continue as far as Junction 5 near Marmande. At Marmande pick up the D708 through Duras and Ste. Foy la Grande, where you'll briefly join the D936 to Libourne and Bordeaux and cross over the River Dordogne. Here you'll come to a roundabout. Take the first exit, signposted to St. Méard and Montpon, along the D708. Distance from Ste. Foy is approx. 6 miles.
