Joan's Restaurant Guide

Joan Lakin

...and some things you may find useful!!!

Remembering that this region is known as the gastronomic region of France, you can eat London restaurant-quality food, at fabulously low prices.

Restaurants listed below are regularly frequented by my husband and myself and visiting friends, we speak as we find!

A few tips for newcomers to the area:

  • Don’t be in a hurry with your evening meal, you have that table all night.
  • Wines of this region are good, mainly reds and roses. Try house wines, they are more than acceptable. Whites vary to taste, ask the wine waiter, they are very knowledgeable.
  • Try rosé for a change – fabulous chilled in summer.
  • Portions do not seem enormous, however with 4 courses + to consume you’ll need the space!
  • French restaurants don’t major on potatoes – there is always delicious fresh bread on hand. Always replenished.
  • Requesting off menu dishes not always understood or appreciated. One of our guest’s demands for a cheese and onion omelette was disdainfully rejected – we were in a very exclusive restaurant!!
  • Be prepared for a visit from the Chef if you leave lots of food. He’ll want to know what’s wrong with it! Anorexics be warned.
  • Remember in France cheese comes before dessert – it’s their way.
  • Everyone smokes here, be prepared for intercourse cigarettes.
  • Dogs allowed, so don’t be surprised to see a large hound under a table or a small dog in someone’s lap. Upside - they are normally extremely well behaved.
  • Say “Bon Jour” or “Bon Soir” to every table you pass as you sit down, consider polite and good manners, it will be reciprocated.
  • Know your sausages!!!! Delicious Merguez are very spicy, Andouillette are made from tightly packed gizzards, they look fat and juicy, beware when you bite into one -it opens like Alien! Popular on some menus. actually delicious, try it if you are willing to be open minded!!!
  • There are lots of small bars in the region and beyond who serve a quick lunch of moules/frites or sandwiches. Try one! They are great fun and sitting in a pavement café with a class of wine is a good way to pass the 12.00 to 2.30 closing time around here.
  • We have just touched on known restaurants in the immediate vicinity – wander further there are treasures untold in this region!
